Fingerprint Scanner Not Working

If the fingerprint scanner on your time clock isn’t working, there are a few possible causes to consider. Use the checklist below to troubleshoot the issue.

Common Causes & Troubleshooting Steps

1. User Error (Improper Finger Placement)

  • Ensure the employee is placing their finger flat and firmly on the scanner.

  • Avoid rolling the finger. Press down gently and hold for a second.

  • Tip: Try different angles or a different finger if needed.

2. Only One Finger Enrolled

  • Check the employee's profile to confirm that more than one fingerprint was enrolled.

  • It's best practice to enroll multiple fingers to avoid recognition issues.

3. Hardware Loose or Disconnected

  • The fingerprint scanner cable may have come loose from the motherboard inside the clock.

  • If comfortable, open the device and check the cable connection, or contact support for assistance.

4. Clock Needs a Reset

  • Power off the clock and restart it.

  • After restarting, try scanning again to see if the issue is resolved.

5. Hardware Failure (Dead Scanner)

  • If none of the above work, the scanner itself may be faulty.

  • Contact support to determine if a replacement is needed.

Tip: Quick Test

If the scanner works for some employees but not others, the issue is likely finger placement or enrollment, not the hardware.
